Research Abstract

The marechaussee, a rural police force, served both as a royal army, keeping order particulary in the countryside and on highways, and as a royal court (prevot's court) judging without appeal cas prevotaux. The following is the main results of this research into the Haute-Normandie's marechaussee in the first half of 18th century. (See the Report of this research)
First, after drawing up a liste of men of Haute-Normandie's marechaussee in the first half of 18th century, entitled "Liste des hommes de la marechaussee en Haute-Normandie (1720-1750)", we published il.
Secondly, we analyzed informations extracted from the liste (height, age, reason of release, etc.) for making clear what kind of men kept the public order in Haute-Normandie. We read a paper on its result, entitled "Men of Haute-Normandie's marechaussee in the first half of 18th century (1720-1750)".
Thirdly, we read another paper on the military and judicial officers of the Haute-Normandie's marechaussee in the same period, entitled "Royal Officers during the Old Regime France : an example of Haute-Normandie's marechaussee in the first half of 18th century".
Finally, we examined a habitants receptivity to the royal power by giving attention to the relation between the habitants and the marechaussee. The fruits were prepared as a paper entitled "Local habitants and the marechaussee : their defender or oppressor?".
We will contribute these three papers to journals in the near futur.
