Research Abstract |
The purpose of this research is to reconsider the Becket Dispute, that is the controversy between King Henry II of England and Archbishop Thomas Becket of Canterbury, by an analysis of the latter letters. The research results are as follows : Firstly, we were able to access the manuscripts of the letters of Thomas Becket in the British Library, the Bodleian Library, the Cambridge University Library, and the Lambeth Palace Library. After we investigated the manuscripts with care, we obtained them in microfilm or facsimile. Secondly, we reconsidered the Becket Dispute by an analysis of the manuscripts of his letters, especially Fraternitatis vestre, Mirandum et vehementer. We could also research into the relationship between regnum and sacerdotium. Thirdly, our paper ‘A Japanese Translation of Thomas Becket's Letter Fraternitatis veatre' was published in The Hokkai-Gakuen Law Journal, 40-2, pp.177-219. On the other hand, our paper on Mirandum et vehementer is coming soon.
