Research Abstract

Intercalation of various mercapto carboxylic acids into Mg-Al layered double hydroxide were performed at 60℃, 24 h by ion exchange methd. On the way, the intercalation of mercaptopropionic acid was found to be accompanied with the dimerization through oxidation of -SH group. This was evidenced by the the disappearance of υ(SH) at 2600 cm^<-1> and appearance of υ(SS) at 560 cm^<-1> in Raman spectra, and also the low-field shift of C connected to -SH group due to the oxidation of -SH group in solid-state ^<13>C CP/MAS NMR spectra Adsorption experiment was performed for 0.1 g mercaptosuccinic acid intercalated LDH with 0.1 dm^3 of 100 mg dm^<-3> Hg^<2+>, Ag^+, Cu^<2+>, and Pb^<2+> aqueous solutions in 5 h. Complete adsorption of Hg^<2+>, and 40 % adsorption of Ag^+ ions were observed. The adsorption site will be -S-S- bond with the ratio of Hg^<2+>/ -S-S- of 1.0. This value suggests that the adsorption site of Hg^<2+> ion would be disulfide bond. This interaction site was confirmed by XRD and ^<13>C CP/MAS NMR spectra after the adsorption of Hg^<2+> ion.
