Research Abstract |
The aim of this research project was to improve accuracy and reliability of the ultrasonic flaw detection technique that is one of the most popular technique of non-destructive testing of machines and structures. The approach in this study was to develop a new type ultrasonic transducer, called contact-type line-focus transducer, which possesses a unique structure and characteristics. The result of this research project is summarized as follows : (1)The transducer developed in this research has been shown to excite and detect Lamb waves in plates, generalized Lamb waves in coating materials, and cylindrical waves in bulk material, rather easily than existing transducers. (2)Directivity of the developed transducer was examined by theoretical, numerical, and experimental analysis. It has been confirmed that the transducer basically possesses characteristics as intended. (3)The mechanisms of excitation and detection of Lamb and cylindrical waves were investigated by finite element analysis. The result provides a guide for improving the transducer. (4)The applicability of the transducer to TOFD method was examined. It has been shown that the transducer is applicable to TOFD method.
