Research Abstract |
Polymethylmethacrylate(PMMA)-based bone cements containing bioactive titania particles, were prepared and their mechanical properties and osteoconductivity were evaluated. The cements were inserted into rat tibiae and solidified in situ, which were removed at 6 and 12 weeks after implantation for evaluation of biocompatibility and osteoconductivity. It was revealed that cements containing nano-sized titania particles had good osteoconductivity, but mechanical properties inferior to commercial PMMA bone cements. On the other hand, cements containing micron-sized titania particles had better mechanical properties and osteoconductivity than cements containing nano-sized titania particles. Especially cement containing 56 wt% micron-sized titania particles had excellent osteoconductivity, and could be applied not only as a bone substitute but for prosthesis fixation. Cements containing another type of titania are now being investigated for improvement of mechanical and biological properties of the cements.
