| Research Abstract |
CDC guidelines for hands hygiene recommended that hands be disinfected by alcohol based hand rub for prevention of nosocomial infection, and it is used in a ward frequently. In this study, we focused on efficiency for removing bacteria from hands and detrimental effect of hands hygiene. Three agents were tested : Welpas, Gojo and non-antimicrobial soap.
For removing bacteria from hands alcohol based hand rubs were more effective than non-antimicrobial soap. In addition, there was a little number of the bacteria detected from hands by using Welpas, 1 hour after 10 times hand hygiene. Conversely there were great number of bacteria detected from hands by using non-antimicrobial soap.
Score of stratum corneum were significant decrease after 10 times hand hygiene by gojo. There were not significant change by Welpas or non-antimicrobial soap. There were not significant changes in the transepidarmal water loss (TEWL) by using each 3 agents. After hand hygiene (10 times per day for 3 days), there were no significant changes in score of stratum corneum and TEWL by using each 3 agents. Sebum did not decrease. After hand hygiene (10 times per day for 5 days), there were significant changes in the score of stratum corneum by using each 3 agents. TEWL were significant increase and sebum decrease by using non-antimicrobial soap. As visual skin damage, xeroderma and crack were often found. These skin damage were often found on a finger-tip or circumference of a nail. Skin damage score ware were increased by alcohol based hand rub, not significant increased by non-antimicrobial soap for 5 testing days. In addition, the number of the resident flora decreased by use of alcoholic hand rubs.
