Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Title: Usefulness of MET-PET in head and neck cancer
In recent years, various studies about PET have been performed and the PET imaging is considered to be an important tools. FDG and C-11 methionine (MET) are commonly used tumor-seeking agents.
Currently, FDG-PET is widely used in clinical settings and also in head and neck cancer diagnosis, staging and treatment. MET-PET is also widely used for brain tumor. However, in head and neck cancer the diagnostic value of MET-PET is uncertain. Therefore, in our study we evaluated the usefulness of MET-PET in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Moreover, we compared MET and FDG PETs in the same cases and found MET PET has the similar uptake ability like FDG PET and MET-PET may predict the prognosis of the patient with OSCC.

Project 2 (FDG-PET and 3-phase bone scintigraphy to monitor hyperbaric oxygen therapy for BRONJ) 1; Ongoing

Strategy for Future Research Activity

FDG-PET and 3-phase bone scintigraphy to monitor hyperbaric oxygen therapy for BRONJ as a project 2 is ongoing. Evaluate 3-phase bone scintigraphy using new analysis method of BUV (Bone Uptake Value) from already collected series of osteoporotic patient (patient treated by oral BP). All patient in this group received oral bisphosphonate treatment for osteoporosis. Panoramic radiograph, CT, MRI, 3-phase bone scintigraphy and FDG PET images were used for making proper diagnosis. After diagnosis, treatment was done by cessation of BP, giving antibiotics therapy, irrigation, pre-operative HBO therapy for 20 sessions, conservative minor surgical debridement and again post-operative HBO therapy for 10 sessions. Then 3-phase bone scintigraphy and FDG PET images will do again for monitoring the effectiveness of HBO therapy. The 3-phase bone scintigraphy analysis will be performed using a new analysis method of BUV (Bone Uptake Value). Collect new series of metastatic patient (intravenously treated by BP) and evaluate FDG PET and 3-phase bone scintigraphy using BUV All patient in this group received intravenous bisphosphonate treatment for osteoporosis. Diagnosis and treatment plan are as same as osteoporotic patient.
