Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Title: Usefulness of MET-PET in head and neck cancer
In recent years, various studies about PET have been performed and the PET imaging is considered to be an important tools. FDG and C-11 methionine (MET) are commonly used tumor-seeking agents. Currently, FDG-PET is widely used in clinical settings and also in head and neck cancer diagnosis, staging and treatment. MET-PET is also widely used for brain tumor. However, in oral cancer the diagnostic value of MET-PET is uncertain. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of MET-PET in oral squamous cell carcinoma OSCC) and compared MET and FDG PETs in the same cases.
Title: FDG-PET and 3-phase bone scintigraphy to monitor hyperbaric oxygen therapy for BRONJ
Bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of jaws (BRONJ) is one of the most complicated inflammatory conditions in oral and maxillofacial region. For BRONJ, there is no established diagnostic modality and treatment option. ently, Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBO) therapy has been suggested in the treatment of BRONJ; however, the effectiveness is controversial. In our previous report, we have performed hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) and its effectiveness was evaluated by FDG PET which is not under coverage of health insurance and expensive. Bone scintigraphy with BUV is another convenient and less expensive method for BRONJ. Thus the aim of this study is to establish a diagnostic modality and evaluate the effectiveness of HBO therapy using FDG PET and bone scintighrapy.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

In last 1year, ‘Usefulness MET-PET in head and neck cancer’ as a project 1 is finished. It’s now on proceeding for publication in an international journal.
And, FDG-PET and 3-phase bone scintigraphy to monitor hyperbaric oxygen therapy for BRONJ) as a project 2 is ongoing.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

1. Collect new series of metastatic patient (intravenously treated by BP) and evaluate FDG PET and 3-phase bone scintigraphy using BUV
All patient in this group received intravenous bisphosphonate treatment for osteoporosis. Diagnosis and treatment plan are as same as osteoporotic patient. Then FDG PET and3-phase bone scintigraphy analysis will perform using SUV and BUV and evaluate the differences in two groups.
2. Immuno-staining: Observe the inflammatory cell infiltrates and extension of necrosis in the lesion During the surgical intervention biopsy sample will be collected and H&E staining will be performed. Paraffin block will prepare from the formalin fixed (48 hrs) biopsy sample. Then the 5 µm thickness cryo-section will prepare. H&E staining will performed with its standard protocol. Then the inflammatory cell infiltrates and the necrosis in the lesion was visually analyzed under microscopy using the software Image J.
