The two research articles are concerned with new phenomena that become possible when light and matter are ultrastrongly coupled, a regime of quantum optics which only has been reached in the last few years using artificial atoms. The book chapter concerns how to couple a superconducting qubit to surface acoustic waves (SAWs) and how this realises the new quantum optics regime of a ”giant atom”. All this work is in line with my stated purpose of investigating new regimes in quantum optics made possible by artificial and/or hybrid quantum systems. I gave a talk about the multiphoton Rabi oscillations at the APS March Meeting. I presented a poster about the giant atoms at the International Symposium on Dynamics in Artificial Quantum Systems in Tokyo, January 12-14, 2016.

1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.

Reason

I evaluate my progress as better than it was expected. Working in the group of professor Nori at RIKEN has made possible several fruitful collaborations, enabling me to initiate many projects along the lines of my research plan.
In addition to the work mentioned above, I am also co-author on a research article submitted at the start of FY2016 (arXiv:1604.04059) where we investigate how to use an ensemble of artificial atoms to test quantum mechanics at a larger scale.
My ongoing projects are numerous: I am co-authoring a large review on microwave photonics with superconducting artificial atoms; I am writing up a paper on some further applications of ultrastrong coupling; I am working on a paper on the interaction between two giant atoms; a paper is being written up by my co-authors and me on a giant atom with large distances between its connection points; a paper is being written up by my co-authors and me on the dynamics of an artificial atom placed in front of a mirror; I am supporting experimentalists on a few projects concerning superconducting qubits coupled to SAWs; I am collaborating on a project about graphene plasmonics, etc. I also have several ideas for future projects.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

In the near future, I aim to complete a few of the projects mentioned above. After that, I would like to continue with other projects concerning ultrastrong coupling and superconducting qubits coupled to SAWs.
For example, I would like to try to connect ultrastrong coupling and the quantum trajectory formalism for quantum measurements, which I am familiar with from my graduate studies. I would also like to explore further possible applications of ultrastrongly coupled systems, since that has proved a fruitful area of research in the last year.
I also want to explore other possible uses for SAW, and perhaps connect the work on SAWs and superconducting qubits to ultrastrong coupling, since that regime seems within reach for this experimental system.
I plan to continue my collaborations here in Japan and with the researchers from Italy, Sweden, England, Canada, and Germany that I currently have joint projects with.
I plan to attend a few conferences to present the results of my research and perhaps make a visit to some of my collaborators.
