2017年9月にサモア独立国ウポル島において、サゴ属植物の生態調査を実施した。12年前には島の北東部と南東部においてMetroxylon warburgii (Heim) Becc.の生育を確認し、北東部においてその伐採調査とM. paulcoxii McClatcheyの形態調査を行った。元々サモアにおいてサゴ属植物の導入は比較的新しく、それにはフィジーのロトゥマ島の関わりがあったと考えれている。前回の調査後、サモアでサゴ属の栽培振興が進められたと伝えられていたが、今回、ウポル島の北東部、南東部のみならずほぼ島の全周でサゴ属植物の生育を確認することができ、何れもその形態的特徴からM. warburgiiと考えられた。また、それら個体群の中に花序を抽出、結実した個体はみられるものの、立ち枯れているものは少なかったことから、栽培化が進み、一定の管理の下に定期的にM. warburgiiの葉が収穫され利用されているものと理解された。一方で、12年前に島北東部で確認されたM. paulcoxiiのかつての生育地においては、GPS情報をもとに周辺地域も含めて調査したが、生育を確認することはできなかった。
一方、M. paulcoxiiは1998年にサモアに分布するM. warburgiiとは別種として報告されたものであるが、この度、過去に得たM. paulcoxiiの小葉試料からゲノムDNAを抽出し、太平洋に分布する他のサゴ属Coelococcus節植物ならびに東南アジアに分するサゴヤシ（サゴ属Metroxylon(Eumetroxylon)節）と合わせ、5S nr DNAスペーサー領域の塩基配列を決定し、各種の系統関係について解析したところ、M. paulcoxiiはM. warburgiiとともに一つのクレードを形成したことから、これらの遺伝的距離は極めて近いものと考えられた。

Reason
12年前のウポル島調査時点と比較して、Metroxylon warburgii (Heim) Becc. の栽培化が大きく進展したことを確認できたことの成果が大きい。しかしながら、12年前にも生育が1サイトでのみしか確認できなかった Metroxylon paulcoxii McClatcheyが本年度の調査においてはその生育を確認することができなかった。ポリネシアでのヤシ科植物の民族植物学的な調査を進めているハワイ大学との連携強化による検討の要がある。

| Strategy for Future Research Activity |
平成29年度は、当初の予定通り、パプアニューギニアのブーゲンビル自治州（ブーゲンピル島）において、現地関係機関の協力を受け、サゴヤシ（Metroxylon sagu Rottb.）の生態調査、伐採による収量構成要素の調査を実施する予定である。
