| Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
飼育ボノボ・チンパンジーでの観察・実験研究、および野生ボノボを対象とした観察研究をおこなった。さらに、比較対象として、飼育および自然環境下でのウマ・イヌの観察・実験研究もおこなった。ドローンを用いた上空からの野生ウマの観察や、野犬集団にGPSを取りつけて集団行動の記録、およびそれらで得られたデータを数理情報学的に解析する手法の確立など、新たな研究の展開を精力的におこなった。また、オキシトシンを経鼻投与する方法をボノボ・チンパンジー・ウマ・イヌのすべてで確立し、協力や規範に影響をおよぼす社会的認知・行動の生理学的メカニズムの解明に向けた研究パラダイムを構築した。
飼育ボノボ・チンパンジーにオキシトシンを経鼻投与した実験からは、オキシトシンがアイコンタクトに及ぼす影響に2種で違いがみられた。元々、ボノボは他者の目を、チンパンジーは他者の口元を見る傾向があるが、オキシトシンの投与によってこの傾向が強まることがわかった。アイコンタクトは、協力をおこなう上で重要な社会行動のひとつである。ヒト科の近縁種の間でも、オキシトシンの作用が異なることが示唆された。
野生ボノボの観察は、サバンナ-森林混交環境で継続し、4年間に収集した行動・遊動域のデータをまとめた。この地域ではサバンナが40%ほどを占めるが、ボノボがサバンナを利用するのは、日中の0.5％にとどまることがわかった。しかし、同時に、サバンナでの採食行動なども確認された。ヒトは、サバンナに出て進化し、協力社会もその厳しい環境に適応した結果だとも考えられている。近縁大型類人猿におけるサバンナ環境への適応について、今後の研究の展望が拓けた。
これらの成果を、査読付き英文学術雑誌論文5編、英文学術書籍の分担執筆3編等にまとめて公表した。また、一般向けの解説執筆や講演も多数おこない、学術成果の社会還元にも貢献した。
