Outline of Final Research Achievements

Bone marrow that sustains lifelong blood production contains not only blood forming hematopoietic stem cells but also non-hematopoietic cells such as mesenchymal stromal cells to form bone marrow microenvironment, often referred to as niche. It is known to maintain hematopoietic stem cell identity, i.e., self-renewal and multi-lineage differentiation, via fluid factor, adhesion molecule and so on. However, these knowledge have been developed by studying experimental small animals, especially mouse. Relatively little is therefore known about human bone marrow niche, and this project aims to uncover human bone marrow niche using novel experimental animal model.
