2015 Fiscal Year Annual Research Report

A comparative sustainability study of rapidly growing megacities in Southeast Asia (Bangkok, Jakarta and Manila) using geospatial and social-ecological approaches

Research Project

Project/Area Number 15H06067
Research InstitutionUniversity of Tsukuba

Principal Investigator

ESTOQUE RONALDC  筑波大学, 生命環境系, 研究員 (60760139)

Project Period (FY) 2015-08-28 – 2017-03-31
KeywordsGIS / Remote Sensing / Spatial Analysis / Geography / City / Urbanization / Asia / Land Use
Outline of Annual Research Achievements

1)Developed a method for measuring urban volume from remote sensing data.Initial results have been published: Estoque, R.C., Murayama, Y., Tadono, T. and Thapa, R.B. (2015). Tsukuba Geoenvironmental Sciences, 11, 13-20. Presented during the:Center for Spatial Information Science (CSIS) Days 2015, November 19-20, 2015, University of Tokyo, Japan.GIS Association of Japan (GISA) Conference 2015, October 10-11, 2015, Keio University, Tokyo, Japan.2)Improved the proposed method for measuring urban volume from remote sensing data.Presented during the: Association of American Geographers Annual Meeting, March 29-April 2, 2016, San Francisco, CA, USA. Paper:Manuscript has been drafted for possible publication in international refereed journal.3)Classified land-use/cover maps of Manila, Bangkok, and Jakarta. These will be used for scenario-based land-change modeling, social-ecological status and sustainability assessment (FY 2016-2017).

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

The study is in progress based on the planned schedule.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

I would like to present the outcome in the international conferences and submit a paper in the international journal.
