Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
During FY 2015, I conducted a triangulation method study under informed consent at two EU universities (in Germany and Sweden) and three ASEAN universities (in Thailand and Malaysia), in order to estimate the effectiveness and the challenges inherent in teaching approaches. The approaches include Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), English Medium Instruction (EMI), and English for Specific Purposes (ESP). The basis is to gain insights regarding the efficacies of diverse instruction methodologies in order to facilitate normalized national approaches to English education. English education in higher education has been proceeding in a compartmentalized manner, with individual universities developing their own language instruction regimens to cater to their unique needs. All the universities in the four countries I selected for this year’s study have long and successful histories utilizing at least one of these approaches. The mixed method in this study consisted of questionnaires and interviews with students and professors, and class observations. The classes were also videotaped and the recorded data have been transcribed and analyzed. By investigating and comparing the methodologies, this study has been attempting to suggest essential factors for successfully implementing these approaches in Japan. In particular, what technologies could be beneficial and what collaborative activities facilitate input processing and output production. The research outcomes and resultant recommendations will be published and presented at international conferences.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
