Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
At the Computer Communications Lab (CCL) we mainly focus on (1) basic research of enabling technologies for VLC data networks, and video streaming over Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP/2) with a special attention to technique to improve the quality of service and quality of experience, and (2) finalizing our VLC positing system implementation for the smart cart prototype. In addition, we also start our research on the security aspects of VLC networks in the context of multiple users.
At the Computer Arts Lab (CAL), we focus on (1) the implementation of a novel method for near-ultrasound positioning system to support the VLC-based system, and (2) complete the recommendation on framework of cloud-based sale data analysis based on R libraries (WP4). The smart-device app (WP3) is still being developed to further improve functions and stability.
Researchers at both groups also start working together to integrate hardware implementation and software (WP5). Besides the implementation, our achievements are also published in academic journals and conferences. In particular, in the AY2016, four journal articles (including IEEE and IEICE transactions) and four conferences papers have been published as results of this project.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The project progressed rather smoothly thanks to the close coordination between the two groups at CCL (led by Prof. A Pham) and CAL (lead by A/Prof. J. Villegas) as specified in WP6. In each group, we tried to maintain project progress weekly meeting to confirm work status and quickly address any arising issues. The joint meeting/seminar between the two groups are also organized in the monthly basis.
With these efforts and mechanisms, our joint project are progressed the the original plan, in terms of both proof-of-concept implementation and academic research. In total we have published six journal articles (2+4 in first and second years) and eleven conference papers (7+4 in first and second years).
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In the AY2017 both groups at CCL and CAL will focus on completing the WP5 to integrate and to evaluate the developed hardware prototype, software apps and service servers. The main goal in this stage is to comprehensively demonstrate the complete system. In addition, we will continue our investigation on several basic research issues, especially the security for VLC networks, methods to improve total throughput in multi-user environment. Furthermore, both groups will plan to improve the newly proposed ultra-sound positing method.
Finally, as this is the final year of the project, to properly manage the project and to ensure that the project is properly finalized, within the scope of WP6 (led by Prof. Pham, the PI), we will re-visit the overall progress of the project and summary the key achievement in the technical report.
