Outline of Annual Research Achievements

After initial research on the concept of hybridity, four project researchers went to Berlin for participation in a conference on the ‘Poetics of the Pacific’ (Deutsch-Japanisches Zentrum). Following further research in German archives, three of them handed in papers for a planned volume on “Pazifikismus”: Klawitter on Tahiti and German enlightenment; Joch on "Brecht's ‘Judith von Shimoda' and Commodore Perry’s Black Ships”; Schwarz on the depiction of Cook in a contemporary novel by Swiss author Lukas Hartmann. Co-researcher Toyoda elaborated an article on the hybridisation of English in Papua New Guinea. As co-editors of the forthcoming publication, Kumekawa, Schwarz and a German partner (Goerbert, Free University Berlin) collected more than 20 articles from our international research network.
To disseminate ideas of the project, the principal investigator presented several papers. Schwarz elaborated articles on travel reports about 'sexual hospitality' in Polynesia and on German literature dealing with the functioning of different islands in the cultural production of the Pacific regarded as cultural transfer zone. In spring 2016, Schwarz went to Pohnpei for field studies on a rebellion against German colonial power in 1910. He joined the ‘rebellion commemoration day’ (24th of Febr.) and visited spaces of memory for photographic documentation. For this case study on resistance against imperial domination, he interviewed locals about their family memories, college teachers and the Micronesian Minister of Cultural Affairs (Mauricio).

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

The research on Pohnpei could be preponed, because there was a delay in the editing process of the planned volume on "Pacificism". In general however, we are making progress as planned.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

A major object of the project will be the editing of the planned volume on “Pazifikismus” with German publishing house “Koenigshausen und Neumann” in Wuerzburg / Germany. This project involves proofreading, layout and the production of an index.
The principal investigator will fly to Vienna for a presentation of his research on Pohnpei at the conference of the International Comparative Literature Association (July 21st-27th, 2016). In Austria, Schwarz plans to do research on Austrian expressionist Robert Mueller’s novella “The Girl of the Island” (1919). After further research on the Pohnpei rebellion in Germany / Berlin, Schwarz will present the results of this research on Mueller at a conference in Seoul (Asiatische Germanistentagung, August 23rd-26th).
On December 11, 2016, we are planning to conduct a workshop in Tokyo, also to give young researchers a chance to present papers and to coordinate upcoming research of the project (field trips to Samoa / Micronesia / Papua New Guinea).

Causes of Carryover

I went to Pohnpei in February/March 2016, these expenses will be dealt with in the next fiscal year.

Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget

Planned activities for the fiscal year 2016:
conference participation, research trips, workshop; proofreading, editing and production of an index for our planned volume on "Pazifikismus"
