Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
On July 8, 2017, the research group conducted a workshop on “Deconstructing Insularity. The Pacific as a Sea of Islands” at Tokyo's Rikkyo University. Among the presenters were three researchers from the core group of the project: Arne Klawitter, Mario Kumekawa and Thomas Schwarz. The principal investigator Thomas Schwarz went for archival studies to Germany. In September 2017, he presented results of the project on an international conference for researchers from the field of Intercultural German studies in Flensburg (Germany) and on a national conference of the Japanese German Studies Association (JGG) at the University of Hiroshima. In October, he was invited to present closing remarks in a round-table discussion with Stephen Clark and Anna Johnston for an International Symposium on English Literature and the Pacific Ocean at the University of Tokyo (Pacific Gateways, 24./25.11). He published a summarizing article on the concept of Pacificism in a volume on cultural turns in German studies and comparative literary studies. Finally he participated in the international Humboldt Kolleg "West-Oestliche Wahlverwandtschaft" on German exoticist Hans Bethge at the University of Sydney.
