Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In this research, we conducted textual investigations and other information gathering activities in order to reexamine 19th century philosophy of science from the point of view of contemporary philosophy of science. There are three issues named as the important points of comparison: demarcation problem, scientific realism, and philosophy of particular sciences (philosophy of physics, philosophy of biology, and philosophy of social sciences). In all these topics, the research revealed similarities and differences between 19th century thoughts and contemporary thoughts. In addition, this research focus on the interaction among three European countries (Great Britain, France and Germany) in terms of philosophy of science. Among other things, we examined the propagation of positivism from France (mixing with similar English thoughts) to Great Britain, Germany, Austria, and United States, finding that the thought has experienced significant transform in this process.
