Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Humorous image of the Northern European Art was founded in the smiles of the Gothic sculpture. The smiles are classified into blessed persons, devils, portraits, the dead, and fools, from the viewpoint of the meaning. The smiling faces caused beholders to smile. We present six elements as following themes to smile; the world upside down, playing games, scatology, sex, animals, and proverbs. The themes were developed interrelating between the art genres. The receptive persons reach from semi-literate to clergymen.
