Outline of Final Research Achievements |
It has been confirmed that the mutual artistic relationship between Europe and Asia was firstly caused by the Christian policy of expansion after the counter reformation in Europe. Persia and India, among the Asian countries, where mainly the court and the courtiers had a close contact with Europe, accepted European art seriously, though thier interest in it drastically fell back soon after their relationship with Europe became weak. As to Japan, easpecially after the prohibition of Christianity by the Tokugawa Shogunate, non-Christian subjects and European style of art intrigued only a part of painters outside the court, who produced a unique style unifying the European and Japanese, which would offer a basic knowledge and technique of Western culture and art in the Meiji period.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
