Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study has tried to focus on the nineteenth century British popular drama as a source of generating the sense of Englishness, and prove that the patriotic mood described in the contemporary melodrama had a close relationship to the xenophobic atmosphere and racial discourse which had started to appear as the British Empire began to lose its hegemony around the end of the nineteenth century. Before this study was undertaken, my hypothesis was that Anglo-Saxonism began to have its clear entity during the Victorian period. However, it turned out that the British Isles have always been invaded from its enemies since time immemorial, and the indigenous people were conscious of their mongrel background. As the result of this study, I came to the conclusion that the nineteenth century British popular drama has shown how familiar British people had found with the German people, for the latter relatively had kept its purity as an ethnic group.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
