Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This research focuses on the interactions between Irish fiction and travel books on Ireland published between 1780 and 1864, by examining the material realities of travel in the period in the context of the real and imagined geographies of Irish fiction. One unique aspect of this research is its analysis not only of how travel books influenced the descriptions of travel, scenery and people in prose fiction, but also the reverse: how fiction influenced travel writing. The research also looks at the repeated use of the same or similar illustrations in travel books and works of fiction, and at how the circulation of particular visual images gave readers fixed impressions of Ireland and its people. My focus on the interaction between textual and visual discourses in fiction and non-fiction contributes to the opening up of a new field of literary, cultural and historical interpretation and appreciation of Ireland.
