The origin of Sturm und Drung goes back to the literary and aesthetic work of Bodmer and Breitinger in Zurich. The extremely modern basic direction of literature, which can be called literary republicanism, was designed in Zurich in the 18th century and was also received and developed in Germany.

一般にドイツ文学というカテゴリーで江湖に親しまれている文学は、１８世紀のスイス、チューリヒでボードマーとブライティンガーが開始した文学改革に源流を持つ。それは美学的共和主義とも呼べる基本的な芸術における傾向を明確に定義して、それを実践しようとする営みであった。さらに彼らの弟子にあたる第二世代の活躍によりゲーテをも含むドイツの詩人との交流はさらに活発化し、文学のみならず絵画や音楽の分野においても革新的な傾向の作品を生み出す契機となった。
