Outline of Annual Research Achievements

During H29, our research effort focused on data analysis of questionnaire data collected from doctors and nurses at 5 hospitals in H27-H28 as well as collecting data from one additional hospital in Okayama prefecture. At the request of this hospital, the English needs analysis survey was conducted online and included doctors and nurses as well as pharmacists and office staff. Approximately 2,000 valid responses were received and all data was analyzed before the end of H29, for comparison to results from other hospitals.
The interview phase was also conducted in earnest in H29. A total of 10 doctors and 5 nurses were interviewed in a semi-structured format. All interviews were fully transcribed, and analyzed thematically. Findings from interviews clarify and reinforce the large-scale questionnaire survey findings, that: 1) doctors regularly use English at work, though primarily for fidning information as communication with patients is relatively rare; 2) nurses use English much less frequently, and primarily for communicating with patients (though these encounters are also infrequent); and 3) neither doctors nor nurses are satisfied with their university English education and believe that medical and nursing students need to develop English speaking skills.
Findings from were described in one paper, submitted to and accepted by a journal in Japan, and in a longer paper submitted to a SCI-indexed journal (currently under review). Several presentations were also given at local and international conferences.
