Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In the final stage of this research I introduced further developments to the Element Theory model, redefining it as a general theory of phonological representation rather than a theory of segmental structure: all of a morpheme’s phonological properties (not only segmental properties) are now expressed by elements and their head-dependent relations. Rebranded as Precedence-free Phonology (PfP), the theory has unified the traditionally distinct domains of melody and prosody in order to account for the observed interaction between them. It has also redefined the roles of heads and dependents in phonological structure in order to generalize the form and of head-dependent relations across different modules of the grammar. PfP thus places phonology alongside syntax in a generalised theory of linguistic structure where (i) linguistic units combine asymmetrically, and (ii) H-D asymmetry imposes restrictions on how units can combine. The claim is that same H-D relations that are present in morpho-syntactic structure are also present in phonological structure. Additionally, PfP removes the need to specify the linear ordering of segments in representations, since linearization falls out automatically when language users interpret the network of head-dependency relations between elements.
