Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of an embedded training system on student autonomy for university learners of English. At the start of the project the initial plan was to create a basic online learning system with a focus on the understanding of vocabulary. However, the emergency of speech recognition and speech synthesis in modern browsers meant that the project was extended to encompass this new technology.
This year extended analysis was performed on almost 1,000,000 spoken utterances performed by 75 students. The preliminary results of this analysis as well as an analysis of classroom speech pedagogy for use in the Japanese classroom was presented at JALTCALL 2017 and JALT 2017 (Teaching in Technology). An analysis of developing shared effective self-study questions for the purposes of autonomous learning and self-assessment was also presented at JALTCALL 2017.
The system was also improved for usability, and was tested for both use in other institutions, and for mobile use. A technical analysis of these improvements was presented at INTED 2018, and published in the IATED Digital Journal (INTED Proceedings).
