Project Period (FY) 2015-04-01 – 2018-03-31
Keywords3D Printing and Design / Technical Writing / Information Design / 3D Scanning
Outline of Annual Research Achievements

1. Organised an extensive 3D scanning study to analyse the use of iSense and Sense scanners.
2. Designed a LEGO and CAD design course to teach students how to use 3D design software such as Tinkercad and Autodesk 123D Design and write procedural documents to explain the process of online and physical assembly processes. This was an elective English language course.
3. Currently in the process of designing a 3D Printing and Design course using LEGO. Students are expected to make 3D scanning and design runs in the technical communication laboratory and write engineering and design technical reports.
4. Organised a 3D Printing conference with invited graduate students at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The conference presentations resulted in book chapters, and currently work is in progress to write a book to be submitted for publication by ACM Press.
5. Keynote presentation on 3D Printing and Design done at Informatics Institute of Technology, Sri Lanka. Conference proceedings will include my paper on 3D Printing.
6. A presentation will be made on October 2016 on teaching a task-based English language course on 3D Printing and Design.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

Work is progressing as planned. Could work successfully with different groups of students and organisations to spread the idea of how 3D Printing and Scanning could contribute towards Task-based English language teaching.

More work is needed to streamline the process of 3D Printing and Scanning in a course format.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

First, the idea would be to use iPad Mini 2 to streamline the process of 3D Design, Scanning and technical documentation for the elective course. Each student group should be able to handle these processes successfully as project management within the scope of the course.
Secondly, we need to work more the book chapters and collect more data from teaching the course.
3D Printing will also be included in a e-learning course where students will design Google Sites websites with content on product design. The product design content will be based on their own 3D Printed products and products that were chosen from Thingiverse.
2017 and 2018 will see more statistical data collection and preparing journal and conference papers on 3D Printing and design.
Digital storytelling based on 3D scanned printed or designed products will also be part of the information design curriculum in one of the elective courses. More planning is needed on this front.

Causes of Carryover

Several iPad Mini devices to be purchased to be used for class projects in my new elective course to be offered in 2017 on 3D Printing and Design.
Travel expenses will include collaboration with Informatics Institute of Technology, Sri Lanka on teaching 3D Printing in a non-native English language course context. Further travel expenses will include traveling to attend the OCRD-Toronto conference in Bangkok. Miscellaneous expenses will include purchasing books on survey methods and technical writing for task-based language instructions.

Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget

iPad Mini (8 devices); Travel to Sri Lanka; Travel to OCRD-Toronto Conference; Miscellaneous book purchase
