Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study first investigated some distinctive features in the development of stories of English picture books as well as the lexical phrases used in those books.Then based on those data, the researcher created English stories for lower-level elementary school students in Japan.
By using one of the stories created by the author, action research was administered. The results show that teachers’ use of English in the classroom and offering learners enough wait time before they speak out is essential, especially for lower-level elementary school learners.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

小学校に於ける教科としての英語教育は日本ではまだ始まったばかりであり、指導の成果をあげるには、どのような内容を、どの言語で、どのように指導することが効果的なのかについての研究はまだ不十分と言える。教科としての指導で用いるテキストの内容や指導法については、更に豊富な研究が望まれる。
本研究の成果は、英語母語話者から収集した英語絵本物語コーパスを基礎データとして作成した英語絵本を使用した最終リサーチで、初級学習者が自らの気持ちや考えを英語で伝える力を育てるには、教師と学習者間の英語によるやり取りと学習者の回答を待つ充分な時間が必要であることを示した点にあり、これからの初級英語教育の示唆となろう。
