Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In the second year of our project, we built upon what we accomplished in the first year. In the first year of our project, we managed to collect the majority of data for our project, particularly regarding the short term-phase of our study. This included recording conversations, as well as administering questionnaires and interviews at three points in time (i.e., pre-study abroad, post-study abroad, and delayed psot-test). Thus, in the second year of our project, we managed to transcribe the video-recorded conversation and begin the process of data analysis for the short-term phase of our study. Presently, we are doing our quantitative analysis of the patterns and trends that we observed in the transcribed conversations. Initial results seems to suggest that short-term study abroad did indeed have a positive effect on students’ pragmatic competence in some areas. Furthermore, in the second year of our project, we began the data collection for the second phase of our study that examines the effects of longer sojourns abroad. To this end, we conducted the pre-study abroad measurement of students going to English speaking countries for a year, which involved recording conversations, as well as administering questionnaires and interviews. We will conduct the post-test and delayed post-test during this year.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
We have managed to analyze the data for the short-term phase of our study. In addition, we have collected some of the data for the long-term phase of our project, i.e., the pre-study abroad data.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
This year, we have two main goals. First, we plan to continue our data analysis of the short-term phase of our study and draw conclusions from our findings where short-term study abroad is concerned. Second, we plan to complete the data collection for the long-term phase of our project.
