Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In the fourth year of our project, we continued where we left off in the third year. That is, we finished up analyzing our data regarding the long-term study abroad aspect of our study. Like the results pertaining to the short-term study abroad students, the students who studied abroad long-term showed improvement in terms of pragmatic competence; in general, the students who studied abroad long-term significantly outperformed those that studied short-term. These gains involved sending less minimal listener responses overall, but with more variability in the types of listener responses that were sent, being able to speak more, being able to use more conversational repair strategies and being able to initiate turns, etc.
