Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Approximately 140 students had completed both pre- and post- study abroad surveys by April 2018. This data was analyzed, and results indicated that there was no difference in motivation or possible L2 selves among short and long term study abroad participants. All students showed increase in speaking confidence, but in different ways. Short term SA students decreased their anxiety toward speaking, whereas long term increased perceived speaking competence. Interviews with 12 long term SA students; preliminary findings indicate that SA students significantly improve only after the 1 month mark.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
4: Progress in research has been delayed.
Reason
One member of the research team, who is in charge of interview analysis, is currently on an individual overseas sabbatical. This has significantly delayed qualitative research findings.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Three separate papers are currently in progress. Two to three conference presentations are scheduled for 2018. Additional data will be gathered from both short and long term SA participants in both quantitative survey and qualitative interviews. However, the research may need to be extended or temporarily postponed due to individual researcher delays.
|
Causes of Carryover |
Researchers Matthew Apple and Peter Neff were unable to use funds for travel to AILA 2017 due to university restrictions regarding presentations near semester exam periods.
