Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Although we have remained frustrated by the shortfalls of the low-cost eye trackers that we purchased at the beginning of the overall research period, we have achieved the goals that we set ourselves this year. We have finished projects and had a paper published in TESOL Quarterly, one of the most prestigious academic journals in our field. We have also presented at international conferences in Germany and the UK. The German conference was the European Conference on Eye Movement, a rigorous multidisciplinary conference that focusses on the use of eye-tracking in various fields of research, and the UK conference was the European Computer Assisted Language Learning Conference which has its focus on the use of technology for language learning. Our presentations were well received at both events, although the audiences were different in terms of their fields of specialization. We have also written and submitted a further full length article for TESOL Quarterly and it is currently under review. The main project we completed this year continued to examine the strategic competence of Japanese university students when they read English to complete tasks and also investigated the effectiveness of teaching strategy to learners. It was found that teaching strategies was an effective means to improve task performance.
