Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The aim of this study is to investigate the progress of modern main Hanseatic cities as the trade center. Since we already know Hamburg's brilliant growth to the international trade hub, we concentrated our study on the modernization of Bremen, Luebeck and Kiel. On the base of the result of investigations into population, industry, traffic and trade, we may say that these three Hanseatic cities grew to modern industrial harbor-cities. In case of naval city Kiel, its progress to the trade center was restricted to a great extent under the control of the imperial navy. In addition to this, we could recognize the extent of Bremen's trade network and Bremerhaven's important role as one of the biggest port for emigration in Europe. We could also find that the memory of Hansa was discovered and re-invented for the naval and national project of Germany.
