Outline of Final Research Achievements

Japanese people in rural areas have maintained folk plot names as a type of agricultural knowledge and daily vocabulary. This study, based on Hirado Island's villages in Nagasaki Prefecture, clarifies which persons and social groups have shared the names for tiny plots, as well as how these names have been passed down and changed from their earlier forms through several decades up to the present.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

研究成果の意義は，結果的には主に以下の４つである。（１）比較的小規模な地域の内部を区分して類型的に捉える地誌学の一つの方法を提示したこと，（２）従来不明の点が多かったキリシタン組織の編成原理とその規定条件の一端を明らかにしたこと，（３）類型的に把握した集落空間構成とその変化を把握する視点として歴史地理学の景観史との接点を見出したこと，（４）田畑一筆ごとの通称地名という民俗語彙の変化と継承の把握を通じて，農村の人々の生活や生業のあり方，さらには人間一般の空間認知のあり方の一端を解明したことである。
