Outline of Final Research Achievements

The role of the Conference of Security and Cooperation in Europe and America (US and Canada) during the cold war was an important tool for communication between the West and the East, and the Holy See (Vatican) had participated for the Helsinki Conference in 1973. It was vital for the beginning of the debates on human rights and freedom of speech. As the Vatican had been negotiating with the Eastern European countries such as Hungary, Poland, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia (Catholic countries), Holy See could played an essential role for the Helsinki Conference for an argument of freedom of religion. Religious organization such as the Vatican (Holy See) never be seriously examined for security policy of Europa and America and thus this research project is an original contribution for the study of European security policies during the Cold War.
