Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Overall, the research project has made substantial progress and a second paper has been completed and presented at the (1) American Economic Association 2017 Conference and at the (2) Western Economic Association 2016 Conference. In term of further dissemination, a workshop has been held at Kyoto University under the general theme of industrial upgrading through trade-induced technology imitation in Africa. Thanks to the participation of practitioner policymakers and researchers, crucial practical policy implication drawn from the research were discussed and will be considered for inclusion in the forthcoming papers. In addition, subscription to the required databases has to be extended as there is a need to update the database before proceeding with the final part of the project.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The progress benefited a lot from comments and inputs at the annual events of American Economic Association and Western Economic Association as well as the project workshop. Together, the theoretical setting of the project progressed more smoothly than initially expected.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
During the 2017 fiscal year we expect to update the datasets, hire a research assistant and pursue data analysis using the standard GMM-Panel method. Later on, we are planning to shift the data analysis to the advanced econometrics methods (e.g., nonlinear Threshold Panel estimation), as well as include indicators related to the quality of institutions. We are also planning to actively disseminate the research outcomes at a broader audience at international conferences and publications. In this regard, one paper has been accepted for presentation at the Western Economic Association 2017 Conference to be held in San Diego (USA) and a second paper has been submitted for consideration to the American Economic Association 2018 Conference in Philadelphia (USA).
|
Causes of Carryover |
The remaining critical tasks include hiring a research assistant to re-organize and update the datasets, handle data analysis, plan for the next local workshop as well as further dissemination such as international conference presentations and publications.
|
Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget |
Database subscription, Remuneration for research assistant, travel expenses and miscellaneous.
