Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In Japan, while publishers set prices for books, bookstores cannot change book list prices set by publishers, regardless of sales. This study estimated demand for novels books and pocket-sized paperbacks to evaluate the Japanese fixed-price system. The estimation results found that demand for both types is price elastic, implying that discounts are effective to gain additional revenues for publishers and bookstores and to reduce the number of books returned from bookstores to publishers.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
