Outline of Annual Research Achievements

During the past academic year, we made progress in the following areas.

Updated our data collection. Our existing data collection consisted of Toyo Keizai’s Directory of Executives for the years 1990 to 2015. We further updated the dataset by merging the existing data with 2016 data. Professor Kawaguchi and I spent considerable time merging and cleaning the data. Our next step is to merge our database of executives, with the data of universities. Specifically, for each executive, we have information on (i) name of the graduating university, and (ii) year of university graduation. Using this information, we will merge each executive with the enrolment data (= number of students enrolled) for the graduating year, to control for the supply-side of university education.

Presented our research findings. We presented our research findings at the annual meeting of the Eastern Sociological Society in February 2016. We presented in the special session on “elite formation.” The session focused on the role of educational credentials on elite formation from a comparative perspective, namely U.S. and Asia. It was a good mix of quantitative and qualitative research. We gained valuable and constructive suggestions on how to improve our research.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

We are proceeding according to schedule. We updated our database using the latest data, and reported our latest findings in February 2017. We are on schedule to start producing publishable papers later in the year.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

The data cleaning and merging will be completed in May, and we anticipate making significant progress in 2017. We have started analyzing the newly constructed data, and running statistical models and simulations, etc. We will be in good position to start writing up our results in the second half of 2017. We also plan to present our research findings at a research seminar and/or international conference towards the end of the year to gain further feedback of our updated research.

Causes of Carryover

We did not use up our research budget for AY2016 mainly because we did not acquire new data during this year. We plan to acquire the latest version of the Toyo Keizai data during AY2017, as we specify below.

Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget

Given that this will be our last fiscal year for our research project, we plan to spend the rest of our budget efficiently in acquiring resources, and also to present our findings to the wider academic community.

We plan to acquire the new data from Toyo Keizai which will be released in September 2017. We plan to use our research funds for travel expenses towards the end of 2017. Expenditures will also be required to upgrade our statistical software as the license will expire in 2017.
