Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Network development with scholars from various universities and institutions in the Mekong region and Japan has been done in the early period of the second phase (FY2016). Thus, all the objectives of Phase 1 are successfully complete. The key activities in Phase 2 include (1) field research and data collection in the Mekong region (i.e., interviewing JETRO staffs, economics officer of Asian Development Bank, officers of financial institutions, researchers of research institutes, investors, and scholars in Cambodia (3-7 Oct., 2016), Lao PDR (26 Sep.-1 Oct. 2016), Myanmar (7-11 Mar. 2017), Vietnam (18-24 Feb. & 11-15 Apr. 2017), and Thailand (15-25 Sep. & 24-29 Oct. 2016, 3-6 Mar. & 12-18 Mar. 2017). I also participated in a number of JETRO seminars on investment in emerging Asian markets (29 Nov. & 16 Dec. 2016, 9 Feb. 2017). (2) A paper entitled ‘Financial openness, financial markets development, and economic growth: evidence from Americas, Asia, and Europe’, co-author with Dr. Chaiporn Vithessonthi of Sunway University Business School (Malaysia), was presented at the 53rd Annual MBAA International Conference, Academy of International Business Midwest Region, Chicago, the United States during 22-24 March 2017. The paper received the 2017 MBAA International Best Paper Award from this conference. (3) An article entitled ‘Bank Internationalization’ is published in 国民経済雑誌別冊『経済学・経営学学習のために』of Kobe University in April 2017. In conclusion, the main objectives of research in Phase 2 are successfully complete.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The remaining objective from Phase 1 (i.e. network development) was achieved. The main objectives of research in Phase 2 (i.e. field research in the Mekong region, paper development, conference presentation and paper publication) are complete. The remaining activity in the plan of Phase 2, which has not yet been done, is organizing a seminar to present research results and get feedbacks/comments from experts and scholars. A paper entitled ‘The impact of banking industry on economic structure and growth’ co-author with Vithessonthi, C. of Sunway University Business School (Malaysia), has been in the development process and will be prepared for submission to a conference, tentatively the 30 Australasian Finance & Banking Conference to be held in Sydney, Australia in December 2017.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
1. A seminar (i.e., the activity from Phase 2) is planned to be organized in Bangkok, Thailand in September 2017 to verify research results and get feedbacks/comments from experts and scholars. 2. The paper entitled ‘Financial openness, financial markets development, and economic growth: evidence from Americas, Asia, and Europe’ will be revised and submitted to a journal for publication. 3. The paper entitled ‘The impact of banking industry on economic structure and growth’ will be sent to a conference for presentation. 4. Conference presentation for the paper ‘The impact of banking industry on economic structure and growth’ is planned to be done tentatively in December 2017. The paper will then be revised and submitted to a journal for publication.
|
Causes of Carryover |
Due to the constraint of time and the necessity to put priority to field research in the Mekong region, a seminar for verifying research results cannot be organized in the fiscal year 2016.
|
Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget |
A seminar for result verification is planned to be organized in Bangkok, Thailand in September 2017 (during the school break). Experts and scholars from various universities and research institutions (e.g., Thammasat University, Mahasarakham University, Assumption University, King Mongkut's Institute of Technology, Sasin Japan Center of Chulalongkorn University, National Institute of Development Administration, Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Co., Ltd., Kasetsart Business School, and Sunway University Business School) will be invited to join the seminar.
