Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
After completing field research in phase 2 (FY2016) and discussing with scholars and experts about financial services in the Mekong region (i.e., JETRO Seminars in Osaka and Kyoto in May-June 2017 and Research Meeting in Thailand on Sep. 1, 2017), key findings suggest that the level of financial development in the Mekong region, particularly Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia, is still underdeveloped with the banking sector being the backbone of the financial system. I then conducted empirical analyses using a panel data of all countries in the world during 1960-2016 and found empirical evidence suggesting that banking sector development has differential effects on economic structure and growth. The research findings were presented at the 30th Australasian Finance and Banking Conference and published in International Review of Financial Analysis (Impact Factor (2016): 1.457; SCImago Journal Rank (SJR): 0.789). To provide a guideline for financial development in the region, I examined foreign banks activities in less developed ASEAN markets and presented the results at the IABE -2018 Spring Conference. Japanese firms depend largely on services of their home country banks to support their production networks in the Mekong region. Financial sectors of less developed countries in the region need significant development to facilitate the integration of these economies into ASEAN production network. In summary, 2 papers were presented at international conferences and a paper was published in finance journal with impact factor.
