Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
As planned, in 2015 I have focused on: 1) conducting explorative interviews with foreign and Japanese workers, at both foreign and Japanese companies, and 2) contacting companies to seek their cooperation in deeper studies of diversity. In terms of objective 1, I have managed to conduct a total of 20 interviews; these interviews have been transcribed, for which purpose I have hired a research assistant to provide help. In terms of objective 2), I have initiated contact with companies to seek their cooperation, but as yet I have not managed to secure a final agreement. I will continue with this during 2016.
In addition to the stated objectives, I have also devoted significant time and effort during 2015 towards collecting secondary data, specifically in the form of a dataset on Japanese company diversity policies. The reason for focusing on data collection was that Japanese companies have begun to publish their diversity strategies in response to the new law passed in the Diet in the summer/fall of 2015. I saw this as a perfect opportunity to gather data on diversity strategies. In conjunction with this data collection I have also purchased quantitative data from Toyo Keizai in order to construct a better data set for analysis.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Overall the project is progressing rather smoothly: I have managed to conduct interviews as planned, and am also in negotiations with companies to get their approval for in-depth case studies. I am also ahead of schedule in terms of secondary data collection.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
For FY 2016 I will continue interviews, with the aim of ending these by December. I will also put effort on securing the cooperation of companies for the planned in-depth case studies; as these are approved, I plan to visit more with HR professionals to understand how they are seeking to implement diversity strategies. Finally, I also aim to expand my interviews to employees located outside of Japan. Based on this data collection, I aim to write working papers on the topic of how employees are dealing with diversity initiatives at companies operating in Japan.

Causes of Carryover |
Research assistant worked less than planned, hence her salary was lower than the initial budget.
|
Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget |
I plan to use the extra money for travel to conferences to present papers.
