Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This project explores the phenomenon that while Japanese government favors skilled labor migration and has created policy incentives to welcome foreign talents,Japanese firms seem to have trouble retaining skilled foreign workers. The general consensus is that there are problems with how Japanese firms organize labor and employees' careers. In the previous two years, we focused on collecting data, including interviews with foreign workers and human resources managers from Japanese firms. In this final years, we have focused on analyzing data and producing outputs. We carried out the following activities: 1) Presentations at international conferences. The researcher and her research assistant have delivered papers at International Convention of Asia Scholars, Association of Asia Studies Conference, and other thematic international conferences and workshops. 2) Organizing an international workshop on the theme of Skills Labor mobility in Asia in order to present our findings and at the same time obtain a broader perspective by gaining knowledge about other studies on the similar topics in Japan and Asia. The workshop, "Skilled Labor Mobility: Japan and Beyond" was held on January 17th, 2018, at Waseda University. It was participated by 12 scholars from Asia, Europe and Australia. 3) Drafting papers and book chapters.
