Outline of Annual Research Achievements

During this academic year we collected data about the discourse of campus sustainability on our campus. We analyzed this data from our surveys and interviews and presented preliminary results at two international conferences--one that was held in Japan in November, 2015, and another that took place in Hawaii in January 2016. We contributed to one publication on conference sustainability and made progress towards writing up results from research on our campus for publication. One member also attended an international symposium on campus sustainability that took place in Hong Kong.

We also supported student projects related to campus sustainability and brought students involved in these projects to one local/international conference where they presented (in English) about their work.

Finally, we continued to network with other actors in the campus sustainability movement throughout Japan. We attended Kyoto University's annual symposium on campus sustainability and continued to learn and build relationships.

Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

As this is a cross-cultural project (involving one non-Japanese who is the leader), we have needed perhaps more time than a monocultural group might have needed to develop smooth communication and clear roles for working together and contributing to different aspects of our project. However, this time has been well-spent, and our group is now working together quite smoothly and harmoniously towards common goals.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

For this academic year, we are focused on holding a regional mini-conference on campus sustainability and presenting and publishing about campus sustainability. The mini-conference will take place in October, 2016 and will bring together regional actors around the common theme of campus sustainability. The conference theme has been jointly decided, and is entitled "Campus Sustainability Across Cultures and Disciplines: Connecting Local Actors." With the conference, we aim to do exactly what the title proposes: bring together regional actors from a variety of cultural and disciplinary backgrounds discuss how campuses can be made more sustainable. We are also going to present at at least one international conference this year, and plan to publish an article about campus sustainability culture based on data we collected last year combined with additional qualitative data that we collect during this year.

Causes of Carryover

We had planned for multiple researchers on our team to attend and present at several international conferences. As it turned out, because of scheduling difficulties, only one researcher was able to attend conferences abroad. We also incurred lower personnel expenses than we had expected because our plan for a sustainability intern system was largely subsumed by an student-led project on sustainability that received internal funding.

Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget

In the coming year we will incur costs associated with running our own regional conference. We will be bringing a guest speaker who is an expert on campus sustainability from Hokkaido, and will incur other costs related to the conference. This year we hope that more of our research team will be able to travel abroad to present at international conferences, and in this way we foresee usage of some of the funds that remain from H27. We will also have publishing costs associated with our conference proceedings.
