Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
We made significant progress in research and in the promotion of campus sustainability in Japanese higher education. We held a regional conference that was attended by students and teacher-researchers from four local university campuses, representatives from outside of the region, and community stakeholders. An article on the conference was published in 静岡新聞。We are finishing digital conference proceedings and will publish soon. We conducted research on sustainability discourse at three Japanese universities. This research was presented at an int'l conference in Hawaii and will be published in the conference proceedings. A related paper has been accepted for publication in an international journal. Also, we held a campus sustainability game event in our university's self-access center.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Thanks to a committed interdisciplinary research team and support from our university president and the administration, we have been able to smoothly proceed with our research smoothly.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In our final year we hope to continue to build our network of campus sustainability educator-researchers. We will invite a speaker to campus to interact with students and help share best practices related to campus sustainability. We are also continuing to explore a sub-thread of our research that has emerged: the power of games to raise awareness about global and local sustainability issues. Social impact gaming is a parallel research interest of two of the members of this research project team, and notably organizations such as the International Sustainable Campus Network have recently recognized the power of games for awareness-raising. Given this new trend, we are interested in pursuing questions about how games can serve to raise awareness about campus sustainability locally.

Causes of Carryover |
In this fiscal year we used our funds mostly for travel and conference costs. We reserved funds for travel, publishing, and other miscellaneous costs in the final year of our project.
|
Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget |
In the coming year we plan to use remaining funds for publication of proceedings of the conference we held last fiscal year, bringing a research collaborator to our campus for a lecture on campus sustainability, travel costs for our researchers, and additional miscellaneous research costs associated with completing our project.
