Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In this project we planned to develop a synthetic route to new class of polyhedral clusters, pyramidal compounds of the heavy main group elements. Such pyramidanes, representing metal-rich organometallic compounds, are very promising objects for material and applied science as the precursors for ceramic composites and nanostructures (nanoparticles, nanocrystals, nanowires). As was initially planned, during the first year of this project we succeeded in the preparation of unprecedented pyramidanes of the group 14 elements. As the precursors for pyramidanes, we used cyclobutadiene dianion, tetrasilacyclobutadiene dianion, and tetragermacyclobutadiene dianion derivatives, recently developed in our group. The reaction of these dianions with :EX2-diox (E = heavy group 14 element) complexes provided the desired pyramidal compounds.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
All research targets and plans of the first year of this project were successfully achieved, using the originally proposed synthetic strategy: coupling reaction of the cyclobutadiene dianion derivatives and heavy carbene analogues :EX2 (E = heavy group 14 element). Namely, a whole series of heteronuclear piramidanes with the heavy group 14 elements at the apex or at the base of the square pyramid, or even homonuclear pyramidanes entirely consisting of identical group 14 elements, was synthesized, structurally characterized, and computationally studied. Thus, the project is going quite well within the first year of project without any troubles, in complete accord with the initially proposed schedule.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In the second year of the project, we will expand the series of pyramidanes to include their new members with the group 15 or group 13 elements at the apex of the square pyramid. Group 15 element pyramidanes are expected to be cationic derivatives, whereas group 13 element pyramidanes should be anionic compounds. After the synthesis of such pyramidal clusters, we will optimize the reaction conditions (reagents, solvents, temperature, etc.) to maximize the yields of the products. The newly prepared compounds will be fully characterized and computationally studied to reveal their peculiar bonding features.
|
Causes of Carryover |
During the first year of the project, chemical equipment was originally planned to be purchased, however the experimental work was performed without using such equipment. Therefore, we did not purchase such equipment, and accordingly some amount of money remained after completing the first year of the project.
|
Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget |
The amount of money remained after the first year of the project will be used to purchase the chemical equipment which will be necessary to perform the experimental work planned for the second year of the project. The successful realization of the research plan for the second year of the project requires the use of such equipment.
