Low pass filters used at the site of surface roughness measurement often give totally different results from international standard Gaussian filters. The cause of such inconsistency becomes clear by examining the two important characteristics of the low- pass filter, the transmission characteristics and the phase correct characteristics. However, it is not possible to calculate these characteristics from actual measurement data owing to the end effect and the discontinuity at each end of the data, etc. To address these problems, this research proposed a method for the low-pass filter processing that uses shearing, point symmetric extension, and periodic extension, and produced no end effect but allows the transmission characteristics and phase correct characteristics to be obtained.
