2016 Fiscal Year Research-status Report

Thermodynamic basis of life: protein-carbohydrate interaction

Research Project

Research InstitutionKyushu University

Principal Investigator

CAAVEIRO Jose  九州大学, 薬学研究院, 准教授 (00536732)

Project Period (FY) 2015-04-01 – 2018-03-31
KeywordsGlycan / Sugar / Antobody / Enzyme / Pore forming protein / X-ray crystallography / Thernodynamics / Kinetics
Outline of Annual Research Achievements

1. Research activities were advanced in different fronts with the goal of maximum productivity. Because I started a new laboratory at the University of Kyushu, in which I am the Principal Investigator, the research was concentrated in the publication of results. The experimentation had to to be slowed down momentarily and concentrated to essential aspects of the research. In particular, I have concentrated my efforts towards the determination of important crystal structures. In the fiscal year 2016/17 expenditures were reduced because of my transfer to Kyushu University. The money saved in 2016/17 will be used in fiscal year 17/18 to acquire essential scientific material to complete the project. I think this strategy is working really well, and has led to better than expected scientific output.
2. During the fiscal year 2016/17 I had the opportunity to present our research at various locations oversees. Importantly, the presentations were done by invitation. 3. I was also invited to Hokkaido University where I presented an important part of the results obtained in this project.
4. During the fiscal year 2016/17 the data of my research was published in various prestigious international journals, as detailed in the corresponding section.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.

Reason

Three invited talks (London by the Royal Society, and Chile), and seven papers is a extraordinary achievement for this project in my opinion.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

To obtain additional structural and thermodynamic data.
Publish 3-5 more papers, including one review.
Attend meetings in Japan and abroad.

Causes of Carryover

In 2016/17 I moved from The University of Tokyo to Kyushu University to start an independent research laboratory, in which I am the Principal Investigator. I have saved some money to be used on 2017/18 more efficiently in my new laboratory. This strategy has not slowed down the project in 2016/17.

Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget

The additional money will be used, entirely, for the purchase of goods and articles. This budget is essential for the completion of this project.
