Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
To assess whether NTS function could contribute to the gender difference in arterial pressure (AP) regulation, gene expression in the nucleus tractus solitari (NTS) of Spontaneous Hypertensive Rats (SHRs) was investigated by using microarray. Results showed that the transcript expression of TRPV4 (Transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily V member 4), a channel involved in brain fluid and ion homeostasis control, was significantly increased in the NTS of female SHRs compared to males. Estrogen treatment did not affect TRPV4 expression in the NTS and TRPV4 agonist 4alpha-PDD injected into the NTS of female SHRs decreased AP, suggesting that TRPV4 might be involved in the gender differences of AP via an estrogen-independent alteration of its expression level in the NTS of SHRs.
