Outline of Final Research Achievements

In the renal cortex during the normoalbuminuric stage of diabetes mellitus rats, mitophagy (mitochondrial-selective autophagy), a degradation-removal system for maintaining renal homeostasis, is induced in oxidative stress-damaged mitochondria that can cause nephropathy. The degraded mitochondrial proteins were excreted (removed) in urine.
Detection of mitochondrial proteins in the urine may represent an early diagnostic marker for diabetic nephropathy.
