Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Recently zirconia ceramic gains attraction as a dental implant material. However zirconia has been known as a bioinert ceramic therefore to make bioactive surface, different treatments have been developed. For example calcium phosphate coating is one of the methods could induce bioactivity to the zirconia surface. On the other hand, zinc phosphate is known as dental cement. Industrial applications for zinc phosphate coating are corrosion and wear resistance. Previously, it was reported that calcium phosphate could be formed on the zinc phosphatized titanium by using calcium solution. The zirconia tablets were made by biaxial pressing zirconia powder. The pressed tablets were sintered at 1400℃ for 3h. The prepared zirconia discs were placed in the zinc phosphate solution which was made by mixing zinc phosphatizing solution in a hydrothermal vessel maintained at 200℃. SEM images show that plate-like crystals were formed on the zirconia discs surface of the hydrothermally-treated with zinc phosphate solution at 200℃ for 12 h. The coating layer was covered zirconia surface completely. The samples coated with less time duration or lower treatment temperature showed less coating crystals with low surface coverage percentage. The coating layer with thickness less than 5μm of covered on the zirconia surface. In addition, for the XRD patterns 2 series of peaks were assigned for zirconia and zinc phosphate crystals. The intensity of zirconia and zinc phosphate coating peaks has been changed by increasing the thickness of coating layer.
